Field Trips!

The St. Louis Mineral & Gem Society schedules field trips during most of the months between September and June.

Local trips range from within sight of the gateway Arch, for agates, petrified wood, and vertibrate fossils, up to four hours away for geodes. Occasional overnight trips travel to places such as Mt. Ida, Arkansas for quartz crystals.

UPCOMING FIELD TRIPS!!!
October 15th
We will sail Mark Twain Lake searching for treasure! (Well, fossils anyway) We will rent pontoon boats and cruise the lake to several outcrops, and hunt crinoids, brachiopods, and other fossils. Reservations are required. We will be meeting at the Indian Creek Marina. Departure time to be settled at later but likely at the Marina at 10:00 am with departure promptly at 10:30am. If you are late, the boats will be gone. We are usually out on the lake for at least 3-4 hours so you will need to bring lunch & drinks for yourself. Cost of the boat rental will be split between the people taking the trip, typically the cost for the rental is between $10-15 per person. This is a great family trip. We would like to know ahead of time how many people will be going so we know if we need to reserve 1 or 2 boats. RSVP required to Carl Campbell (CECampbell@stlcc.edu) before October, October 8. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring rock hammer, chisel, buckets and paper to wrap and store your fossils. If it is cool or windy you will want a jacket. Alternate date is 10/22 in case of rain out.
